چکیده

Skeletal muscle strength is known to decline with age (Fiatarone, 1993). As an intrinsic risk factor contributing to falls, lower extremity (LE) muscle strength is a critical component in limiting an elderly individual’s dynamic stability (Buchner, 1991; Brown , 1995). It has been reported that fallers demonstrated only 37% of the knee extensor strength, and 10% of the ankle plantar flexor strength exhibited by their non-falling peers (Whipple, 1987). Although these findings infer that muscular weakness contributes to fall ing, only one study has reported the relative challenges posed to LE musculature during activities of daily living (Bus, 2001). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of age and obstacle crossing on relative neuromuscular challenge. It was hypothesized that healthy elderly adults would require a greater proportion of their neuromuscular capacity during level walking and while crossing obstacles.

Effects of Concentric and Eccentric Strength Training on Electromyography Activity of the Knee Agonist –Antagonist Muscle

Purpose: An appropriate activity of the knee agonist -antagonist muscles is important to resist against abnormal abduction-adduction moments loads around knee joint and reduce the risk of knee injuries. Exercise training has been commonly used as an intervention to improve neuromuscular activity within the synergic and/or agonist-antagonist muscles. However, maximizing the effectiveness of exer...

Modeling and simulating the neuromuscular mechanisms regulating ankle and knee joint stiffness during human locomotion.

This work presents an electrophysiologically and dynamically consistent musculoskeletal model to predict stiffness in the human ankle and knee joints as derived from the joints constituent biological tissues (i.e., the spanning musculotendon units). The modeling method we propose uses electromyography (EMG) recordings from 13 muscle groups to drive forward dynamic simulations of the human leg i...

Neuromuscular Adaptations in Elderly Adults are Task-Specific During Stepping and Obstacle Clearance Tasks

Elderly adults have a diminished movement capacity due to physiological and neurological declines associated with advancing age. Previous research suggests that elderly adults use altered neuromuscular patterns to conduct activities of daily living (ADLs). Limited research has addressed these altered activation strategies in obstacle clearance, stair ascent and stair descent. The purpose of thi...

A Hybrid Classifier for Characterizing Motor Unit Action Potentials in Diagnosing Neuromuscular Disorders

Background: The time and frequency features of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) extracted from electromyographic (EMG) signal provide discriminative information for diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. However, the results of conventional automatic diagnosis methods using MUAP features is not convincing yet. Objective: The main goal in designing a MUAP characterization system ...
